⚔️ GOR ULTIMA — OPEN BETA TESTERS WANTED ⚔️
Gor Ultima is getting close.
Gor Wiki
There is currently NO established Open Beta date, but the goal is to begin soon. Before that happens, I'm looking for people willing to jump in, push systems hard, find problems, and help shape the shard before public testing begins.
WHAT IS GOR ULTIMA?
Gor Ultima is a heavily customized Ultima Online shard now running on an improved RunUO 3.1 core under .NET 8.
The core itself has been repaired, updated, and modernized while preserving the RunUO foundation the shard grew from.
And yes — Gor Ultima originally started as a fork of Ultima Adventures, which itself was already a fork of an earlier project.
Over the years, Gor Ultima has increasingly moved in its own direction. Systems have been rebuilt, replaced, expanded, modernized, removed, and created from scratch.
At this point, the goal isn't to reproduce the experience of the project it originally came from.
It's to build GOR ULTIMA.
CULTURE OVER LORE
We are not primarily "lore driven."
We are CULTURE driven.
A major part of that culture is inspired by the Gorean novels.
That does NOT mean Gor Ultima is attempting to recreate every novel, character, city, historical event, or piece of Gorean lore exactly as written.
Instead, we draw heavily from the CULTURE presented in those novels:
⛓️ Customs and traditions
️ Social structures
⚔️ Conflict and competition
Roles and interaction
Community
Trade and economy
Social expectations
️ The general atmosphere and identity of Gor
That Gorean-inspired foundation is then mixed with Ultima Online and, most importantly, the world created by the players themselves.
The heart of the shard is what actually happens IN the world:
⚔️ ACTION
EVENTS
ROLEPLAY
PLAYER INTERACTION
COMMUNITY
CONFLICT
PLAYER-CREATED STORIES
There can absolutely be established lore, history, locations, and ongoing stories, but players shouldn't feel like they're simply walking through someone else's novel.
We're inspired by the CULTURE of the Gorean novels — not chained to recreating their lore word-for-word.
⚖️ GENDER DIFFERENCES ARE INTENTIONAL
One thing testers should know going in:
Gor Ultima intentionally has gender-based mechanical differences.
Female characters are intentionally nerfed in some areas compared with male characters.
This is a deliberate design choice tied to the Gorean-inspired culture and setting of the shard, not an accidental balance issue.
That does NOT mean female characters are intended to be useless or unplayable. They can still progress, become highly capable, and participate across the shard.
But the two genders are not intended to be mechanically identical.
So if you notice a female character has reduced performance in an area where a male character is stronger, that may be working exactly as designed.
What I DO want reported is anything that feels broken, inconsistent, exploitable, or goes beyond the intended difference.
⚙️ SOME OF WHAT YOU'LL FIND
⚙️ Improved RunUO 3.1 core
Modernized for .NET 8
⚔️ Custom character progression
️ Classes, skills, and advancement
Advanced pets, followers, and companions
⛓️ Extensive slave systems and progression
Custom encounters and bosses
Quests and world events
Expanded housing and boats
Custom loot and treasure systems
Guild and community systems
Regional spawning and world systems
️ Weather and environmental systems
Custom client features and UI improvements
Custom launcher and patching system
Windows support
Native Linux support
...and a LOT more.
️ A CUSTOM CLIENT EXPERIENCE
Gor Ultima also uses its own customized client — GorClient.
The goal isn't simply to connect to the shard with a stock UO client. The client itself is being developed alongside the server so features can be designed specifically for Gor Ultima.
That gives us room for functionality that would be difficult or impossible to accomplish entirely through server-side scripting.
Current and developing functionality includes things such as:
Expanded and customized chat functionality
Custom interfaces and gumps
⚔️ Improved combat and information displays
Shard-specific client settings and controls
️ Support for custom interface assets and imagery
Integration with the GorIPL launcher and patching system
Launcher/client handoff functionality
Native Windows support
Native Linux support
Automatic client and launcher updating
The client and server are being developed together rather than treated as completely separate projects.
That means when Gor Ultima needs functionality that standard UO doesn't provide, we have the ability to expand BOTH sides of the experience.
The custom client is also very much part of Beta testing.
I want feedback on:
✔ Usability
✔ Interface behavior
✔ Chat
✔ Controls and macros
✔ Login/relogin behavior
✔ Updating and patching
✔ Windows/Linux differences
✔ Performance
✔ Crashes
✔ Anything that simply feels awkward to use
If something works technically but is annoying every time you use it, I still want to hear about it.
YES — YOU CAN BECOME OVERPOWERED
This is intentional.
GOR ULTIMA allows players who put in enough time, grinding, experimentation, equipment, skills, class advancement, pets, followers, and system mastery to become VERY powerful.
Potentially ridiculously powerful.
We're not trying to permanently compress everyone into the same narrow power range.
Long-term effort should matter.
Part of testing will be helping distinguish between:
✔ Powerful because you earned it
✔ Powerful because systems interact in clever ways
✔ Powerful because you invested serious time into progression
and:
❌ Infinite exploits
❌ Duplication
❌ Progression skips
❌ Broken stacking
❌ Zero-effort paths to extreme power
If becoming terrifying requires a terrifying amount of work...
that may be working exactly as intended.
WHAT NEEDS TESTING?
Pretty much everything.
✔ Create characters and actually play
✔ Explore the world
✔ Fight monsters and bosses
✔ Push progression as far as possible
✔ Compare male/female progression and intended differences
✔ Experiment with strange/min-maxed builds
✔ Test pets, followers, and companions
✔ Test the slave systems THOROUGHLY
✔ Test slave ownership, control, progression, commands, and interactions
✔ Complete quests and encounters
✔ Craft, loot, trade, and use vendors
✔ Test housing and boats
✔ Test guild/community systems
✔ Participate in events
✔ ROLEPLAY
✔ Test the custom client and launcher
✔ Test Windows and Linux
✔ Look for exploits and duplication bugs
✔ Report crashes and console errors
✔ Find broken gumps and UI behavior
✔ Try weird things I probably never considered
MOST IMPORTANTLY — TRY TO BREAK IT.
If your first thought is:
"Okay... but what happens if I do THIS?"
You're exactly the kind of tester I'm looking for.
ABOUT WIPES & ROLLBACKS
Character wipes or server rollbacks should NOT be a normal part of this Beta.
The intention is for the progress you make to remain meaningful.
Safeguards are in place so that if an individual player discovers an exploit, creates invalid data, or manages to do something that could cause grief to the server, the affected data can be isolated and corrected without punishing everyone else.
Development changes are also being handled with proper versioning and migration in mind.
If an update would traditionally risk forcing a world rollback, the intention is to version the affected systems properly and migrate forward instead.
The goal is:
✔ Fix the bad data
✔ Fix the affected player/item/system
✔ Migrate older versions forward
✔ Preserve legitimate player progress
NOT:
❌ Wipe everybody
❌ Roll back the entire shard because one thing went wrong
Unexpected problems can always happen during Beta, but wipes and rollbacks are NOT being treated as the easy solution.
WHO CAN HELP?
You do NOT need to be a developer.
Experienced UO players, shard owners, RunUO/ServUO developers, scripters, roleplayers, PvE players, min-maxers, Windows users, Linux users, event lovers, bug hunters, and normal players are all useful.
Normal gameplay is valuable.
So is someone spending three days figuring out how to create the most absurd character build imaginable.
A developer knows how a system was SUPPOSED to be used.
Players discover how it CAN be used.
BUG REPORTING
Reports don't need to be complicated.
Tell me:
• What you were doing
• What you expected to happen
• What actually happened
• Whether you can reproduce it
• Screenshot/error message if available
That's enough to get started.
⚠️ OPEN BETA
There is currently NO SET OPEN BETA DATE.
But we're getting close, and Open Beta is planned to begin soon.
⚔️ Fight.
Roleplay.
Join events.
⛓️ Push the slave systems.
⚖️ Test the gender-based balance.
Grind until your character becomes terrifying.
Help shape the culture.
Break something.
Then tell me exactly how you did it.
INTERESTED IN TESTING?
If you'd like to participate in the Gor Ultima Beta, there are two easy ways to reach me: Send me a private message here on ServUO.dev or Join the Gor Ultima Discord and talk to me there: Join the GorBot - Ultima Discord Server! You don't need to write a formal application. Just tell me you're interested in testing and, if you'd like, include a little about your UO experience — whether you're mainly a player, roleplayer, scripter, shard owner, bug hunter, Linux user, Windows user, or simply someone curious enough to help us break things before launch. The Discord will also be one of the main places for Beta discussion, coordination, feedback, and bug reporting as we get closer to Open Beta.
